Poster design for the poem “Monster” by Rudy Francisco.

As the part of my studio 1 class, we were given a list of poems to choose from. We then went on to select one section of their work that we found interesting to use for designing a poster by only using fonts and colors.

My choice was the “Monster” by the famous San Diego based author and poet, Rudy Francisco. Monster is about sexual assault. Through that Rudy expresses his hatred towards those who commit such crime by condemning them as the “millions of monsters walking the earth pretending to be men”.

What part I chose?

First time I listened to Rudy performing Monster, I immediately was hooked by the underlined section “How dare you have the audacity to impersonate me”.

This is the first section he starts to condemning the monster and it has a powerful beginning. To me, it was like he was describing someone right up to this part, but then he turns around and start attacking the monster.

Brainstorm

What I did?

While listening to the poem I tried to brainstorm and list all feelings that associated with the context. I used this list as inspiration for my initial sketches, and for the final design.

Roughs

Despite both of these roughs had the potential for what I was indenting to have as my final design, but I felt there were not unique enough.

I chose this version for my final design.
